Our Story
Our restaurant has so much history - Terminous was a small settlement in California that began as a horse trading center in the late 1800s. John Dougherty, a saloonkeeper, saw an opportunity to build a town at the end of Kettleman Lane, where the only way to cross the Little Potato Slough was by ferry. Dougherty developed the town by building a hotel, general store, and applied to establish a local post office. The post office was established, but the name of the town was misspelled as Terminous. The town continued to grow and became a major distribution point for Delta crops in 1927, which brought a boost to the local economy. In the 1930s, celery was the big crop, and during the harvest season, as many as 75 freight carloads of celery were shipped out in one night. This big processing and shipping operation required a large workforce. As many as 150 to 350 laborers were needed during the season. About half the workers commuted to work. The other half lived in "Box Car City" across from the warehouses. Old wooden box cars were taken from their wheels and set up as housing for the workers. The town began to decline in the late 1960s, after a big flood, when the Western Pacific Railroad phased out its shipping operations, and the town was eventually abandoned. However, in the late 1960s, recreational interests gave Terminous new life. Tower Park Marina was developed, named after the big old water tower and the former "Box Car City" is now our beautiful Tower Park Resort!
